The Simple Bed-Making Trick

Once the rest of the bed is made, the reason becomes clear. Fold the top portion of the sheet back over your quilt, comforter, or duvet. Because you originally placed the patterned or finished side facing downward, folding it back now reveals that decorative side. This creates the clean, layered appearance often associated with professionally styled beds and hotel rooms.

To give the bed an even crisper finish, fold the top edge of the sheet down slightly over your quilt or duvet. Then fold both the sheet and quilt back together once more. Arrange your pillows neatly to create a balanced, layered appearance. It’s a small detail, but it can make the entire bed look more thoughtfully arranged.

Comfortable layers can add even more character. One popular approach is using two sleeping pillows with pillowcases that match the sheets and another two that coordinate with the quilt or duvet cover. A decorative throw pillow and soft throw blanket can add warmth and texture, particularly when you’re preparing a guest bedroom.

Of course, not everyone uses a top sheet anymore. The “no top sheet” approach has become popular among people who prefer quicker bed-making, less laundry, or a more minimalist bedding setup. Whether you prefer traditional layers or something simpler, the goal remains the same: creating a bedroom that feels comfortable and inviting. Sometimes, just an extra minute spent folding and arranging your bedding can make the entire room feel noticeably more polished.
